SYMPTOMS OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
MS present itself in phases – sometimes a person may feel well for a while, followed by a period of severely presenting symptoms. This is often referred to as a «flare-up» or an «episode.» Symptoms may include muscle spasms, loss of motor function (difficulty moving arms or legs), numbness, loss of balance, tremors, weakness, and bowel and/or bladder incontinence. MS may also cause problems with the eyes, including double vision, eye discomfort, uncontrollable rapid eye movements, and vision loss. This is not an inclusive list of symptoms as MS symptoms vary significantly from case to case.
CAUSES
Although the exact etiology of MS is unknown, doctors have made great strides in getting to the basis of MS. MS is caused by inflammation of the brain, optic nerve, and/or spinal cord. A diagnosis of MS generally includes imaging of the brain and spinal cord.
HOW DOES SOCIAL SECURITY EVALUATE MS?
Because MS is a listed impairment under Social Security regulations, you may be more likely to receive benefits than with other conditions. You should specify to Social Security details about your MS diagnosis, symptoms you suffer from, and which doctor diagnosed you and treats you for your MS. Social Security will compare your medical records with the regulations to see if you meet special requirements for disability.
If you do not meet the above requirements, your doctor may be able to attest to certain limitations your condition causes you, such as limits on how much weight you can lift, how far you can walk, how long you can stand or sit, and other functional assessments. If these restrictions are supported by medical records, you may be able to qualify for Social Security under Steps 4 & 5 of the sequential evaluation process.
